Ghana teacher unions suspend nationwide strike

Overview

The nationwide indefinite strike by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PTAG/PRETAG) has been suspended following successful negotiations with the government. Dr. George Smith-Graham, CEO of the FWSC, had previously committed that arrears related to promotion and placement would be paid to approximately 51,000 teachers by October 16. By October 15, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) reported completing payments of promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to 56,003 teachers within the Ghana Education Service (GES). This included 49,725 teachers who received funds alongside their October salaries, covering arrears dating back to January 1, 2026. While the GES submitted documentation for 56,633 individuals, 630 cases remain pending due to verification discrepancies, and 23,367 promoted teachers are still awaiting document submission by the GES for processing. As of late October, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has called an emergency meeting to resolve validation issues preventing payments to approximately 28,000 remaining individuals, which includes some non-teaching staff. The government is targeting payment for this group by mid-to-late November 2026. Additional scheduled payments include the digital support allowance in November 2026 and the continuous professional development allowance in December 2026. Implementation of the deprived-area allowance is expected to begin in January 2027.
