Ghana Education Service urges teachers to suspend strike

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has called on pre-tertiary teacher unions to suspend their ongoing strike while the government negotiates to address outstanding grievances. GES Director-General Professor Ernest Kofi Davis warned that continued industrial action could jeopardize the academic calendar, noting that recent efforts had successfully synchronized school reporting within September for the first time in six years.

Negotiations are currently involving the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Labour, and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department. While the GES highlighted measures like the mechanization of promotions to improve working conditions, the National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (NC-PTAs) has expressed solidarity with the striking unions.

The NC-PTAs described the teachers' demands—which include addressing unpaid arrears, delayed promotions, and the implementation of revised collective agreements—as legitimate. The Council characterized the strike as a crisis affecting families and pupils nationwide, citing a credibility deficit caused by years of unfulfilled government promises.
