Ghana expands foreign policy with new envoys and BRICS outreach

President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in four new diplomats to represent Ghana in Angola, Qatar, Israel, and Switzerland. The appointments are part of a strategic effort to broaden Ghana’s foreign policy and deepen South-South cooperation, specifically through outreach to the BRICS bloc of emerging economies.

Mahama instructed the envoys to seek new opportunities in trade, investment, and industrialization while maintaining existing relationships with traditional Western allies. He cited a changing international landscape, characterized by shifting alliances and competition for resources, as a primary driver for this diversification.

In addition to economic goals, the President tasked Nana Antwiwaa Dodoo, the new Ambassador to Angola, with advancing the cause of reparatory justice. This includes addressing the historical consequences of the trafficking of enslaved Africans. Mahama also emphasized strengthening bilateral ties with Angola to prepare for Ghana’s upcoming chairmanship of the African Union in 2027.
