Ghana expands Free Primary Healthcare with new facilities and resource initiatives

Ghana is expanding its Free Primary Healthcare scheme through new infrastructure and resource mobilization. In the Assin North District, the Ministry of Health has officially transferred a fully equipped medical centre at Assin Donkokrom to the local District Assembly. The facility includes a maternity delivery suite, dispensary, and consultation quarters, outfitted with advanced equipment such as digital X-ray units, ultrasound machines, and infant incubators to serve surrounding settlements.

In the Oti Region, the Regional Health Committee is advocating for the establishment of a regional medical store in Worawora to ensure the sustainability of the Free Primary Healthcare policy. During a performance review meeting, committee officials emphasized that addressing barriers such as distance, transportation, and inadequate infrastructure is essential to making healthcare equitable and accessible for remote communities, particularly for maternal and child health services.
