Overview
Ghana is significantly expanding its healthcare reach through the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) programme, which is now operational in 135 districts. Preventative health efforts are advancing. In late September 2026, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) launched a nationwide campaign to vaccinate 440,000 girls aged 9–15 against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) to combat cervical cancer. Dr. Naziru Tanko Mohammed noted that early vaccination is the most effective prevention strategy. Following this, the Savannah Regional Health Directorate conducted a five-day catch-up campaign from October 19–23, 2026, targeting 6,668 unvaccinated girls. During National Patient Safety Day, GHS Deputy Director-General Dr. Caroline Amissah Reindorf also called for strengthened systems to support patients with noncommunicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension.
