Ghana expands tree‑planting drive, shifts focus to maintenance amid climate threats

The Ghanaian Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, announced that the Tree for Life Reforestation Initiative planted over 31 million trees in 2025, exceeding its target. He emphasized that the 2026 phase will prioritize post‑planting care, monitoring and survival of the trees rather than planting numbers alone, urging communities, schools and individuals to take ownership of the seedlings.

On World Environment Day, the Environmental Protection Authority, together with Miro Forestry, led a tree‑planting event in Drobonso, Ashanti region, where about 500 seedlings were planted. EPA Konongo Area Head Louis Kofi Agbozoh warned that increasing floods and extreme weather illustrate the urgent need for climate‑resilient actions. The agency highlighted plans to enforce tree‑planting bylaws in residential areas and launch education campaigns across six districts to ensure the long‑term survival of the new trees.
