Ghana explores BRICS investment while facing structural economic warnings

Ghana is exploring increased engagement with the BRICS bloc through both diplomatic interest and direct investment discussions. The Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) recently met with a delegation from the BRICS Entrepreneurs Alliance to discuss investment opportunities, specifically focusing on furniture manufacturing and business partnerships with Russia. The GFZA highlighted incentives within its Free Zones Scheme intended to attract foreign direct investment and boost export-oriented production.

However, economic analysts have raised concerns regarding the long-term impact of such alliances. A policy paper by banking consultant Dr. Richmond Akwasi Atuahene suggests that joining BRICS may not resolve Ghana’s underlying economic vulnerabilities, such as debt distress and currency depreciation, if the country’s fundamental economic structure remains unchanged. Atuahene argues that true stability depends on moving away from an economy based on exporting raw materials like gold, cocoa, and crude oil toward one that processes and manufactures finished goods.
