Ghanaian leaders debate 24-hour economy policy and job creation

Political tensions are rising in Ghana over the effectiveness of the government’s flagship 24-hour economy policy. New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has criticized the initiative, arguing that nearly two years into the administration, the policy has failed to deliver tangible jobs or improved living conditions. Bawumia described a divide between a “paper economy,” characterized by improved macroeconomic indicators like inflation and exchange rates, and a “pocket economy,” where citizens continue to struggle with the high cost of living.

In response, officials from the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Secretariat stated that the criticism reflects a misunderstanding of the program. They reported that 268 filling stations and 33 companies registered with the Association of Ghana Industries are already participating in pilot programs or running multiple shifts.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson emphasized that while the country has achieved economic stabilization, the next phase of the “New Economy” agenda must focus on structural transformation. This includes boosting domestic production, attracting investment, and expanding exports to turn stability into actual employment and increased incomes for Ghanaians.
