Ghana floods: 39 dead and one infant still missing

Nearly two months after devastating floods struck Ghana on June 29, a four-month-old baby remains the only person officially reported missing from the disaster. Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak disclosed these figures during the Government Accountability Series on August 24.

The floods resulted in 39 deaths and affected 91,989 people from 18,398 households across 77 districts in seven regions. The Greater Accra Region suffered the most significant impact, with 56,022 people affected and 17 deaths recorded. The Central Region followed with 21,882 people affected and eight deaths, while the Volta Region reported four fatalities among 9,466 affected persons.

Other impacted areas included the Ashanti Region, the Western Region, the Western North Region, and the Eastern Region. While recovery efforts have accounted for the majority of victims, the continued disappearance of the infant remains an unresolved aspect of the tragedy. The Minister did not provide specific details regarding the current status of search operations for the child.
