Ghana Football Association intensifies fight against match-fixing

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is intensifying its efforts to combat match-fixing and enhance refereeing standards following concerns raised by President John Dramani Mahama regarding the state of domestic football.

GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum stated that the association has spent the last five to six years addressing these issues through improved referee welfare, training, and monitoring. To support officials, the GFA has implemented measures such as increased allowances, insurance packages, transport arrangements with STC, and the provision of free uniforms and boots.

The association has also adopted FIFA’s referee assessment criteria to strengthen performance monitoring. While acknowledging that match-fixing is a global challenge that no single association can fully eradicate, the GFA noted it has taken disciplinary actions, including banning clubs found guilty of integrity-related offenses. Recent initiatives include a three-day training program for Premier League referees at the GFA Technical Centre in Prampram.
