Ghana Football Association administration and development

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has engaged in efforts to improve technical standards and address administrative challenges. In early September 2026, Premier League match officials participated in a four-day intensive training programme at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence to focus on technical knowledge and recent amendments to the Laws of the Game. Additionally, the GFA announced a Licence D Coaching Course for November 2026 to strengthen grassroots football and player safeguarding.

Following these technical initiatives, the GFA faced scrutiny regarding leadership and sport integrity. Former GFA vice-president George Afriyie criticized current president Kurt Okraku, describing him as ‘underperforming’ compared to predecessor Kwesi Nyantakyi. Concurrently, GFA Director of Communication Henry Asante Twum responded to concerns regarding match-fixing and refereeing quality, stating that ‘no football association in the world can completely curb the issue of match-fixing on its own’ while noting that the association has implemented various solutions to address these systemic issues.

In mid-September 2026, the GFA intensified its response to concerns raised by President John Dramani Mahama regarding the state of domestic football. Henry Asante Twum noted that the association has spent five to six years addressing integrity and refereeing issues through improved welfare, including increased allowances, insurance, transport arrangements, and the provision of uniforms and boots. To strengthen monitoring, the GFA has adopted FIFA’s referee assessment criteria and continues to take disciplinary actions, such as banning clubs found guilty of integrity-related offenses.
