Ghana seeks BRICS Partner Country status to diversify economic ties
Ghana is pursuing engagement with the BRICS economic bloc, though officials have clarified the country is seeking ‘Partner Country’ status rather than full membership. Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that this lower-tier status allows for closer economic and diplomatic cooperation without the full obligations required of founding or acceding members.
The move is viewed as a strategic effort to diversify Ghana’s international commercial and financial relations, providing alternatives to traditional Western financial institutions. By engaging with the emerging-power bloc, the government aims to attract new investment and foster structural economic growth.
The decision has sparked domestic political debate. Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have questioned the implications of the move, specifically asking how it might affect Ghana’s role as the host of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). In response, Minister Ablakwa noted that the previous Akufo-Addo administration had also reached similar conclusions regarding the importance of expressing interest in the bloc.
