Ghana fuel reserves maintained despite regional export reductions
Ghana's National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and state-owned distributor BOST Energies have addressed concerns regarding fuel availability and regional exports. NPA CEO Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe stated that Ghana maintains at least six weeks of fuel cover, noting that additional supplies are currently en route to Tema. Tamakloe emphasized that the primary concern is rising prices rather than supply, noting that government interventions have prevented diesel prices from reaching an estimated GH¢28 per litre due to surging international costs.
Regarding regional trade, BOST Energies Managing Director Afetsi Awoonor clarified that while fuel exports to Burkina Faso and Mali have been reduced, this is due to a combination of prioritizing domestic demand and ongoing rehabilitation works at the Bolgatanga depot. BOST reported supplying only half of the fuel requested by Burkina Faso in July and August, citing increased domestic diesel consumption. To bolster infrastructure, BOST plans to construct LPG terminals in Tema and Kumasi by late 2025.
