Ghana transport fare dispute

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) initially announced a planned 30% increase in transport fares due to rising fuel and maintenance costs. However, following discussions with the Ministry of Transport, the union suspended the hike, pending a review of petroleum product prices.

Following the suspension, reports emerged of unauthorized fare increases by individual drivers in areas such as Madina and the Ashaiman route. In response, the GPRTU ordered commercial drivers to immediately revert to previous fares, stating that individual drivers lack the authority to change prices independently. The union indicated it would reassess fuel prices at the end of the month and warned of potential disciplinary action against members who violate the agreement.

Recent developments indicate that rising fuel costs continue to place significant economic pressure on the transport sector and the broader population. Some drivers have reduced their working hours or ceased operations entirely because they cannot cover expenses like maintenance, insurance, and spare parts. While a recent GHC2 reduction in diesel prices occurred, stakeholders noted it was insufficient to alleviate the financial burden.

The economic impact extends to the wider population, as increased transport costs raise commuting expenses for workers and students and drive up food prices due to higher logistics costs for traders. The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has cautioned against unapproved fare increases, with public relations officer David Agboado stating that any adjustments must follow a “formal government consultation process involving all relevant stakeholders.” Drivers have been warned that charging unapproved fares could result in legal action.
