Ghana fuel price hikes strain transport sector and cost of living

Rising fuel costs in Ghana are placing significant economic pressure on commercial drivers and the broader population. High fuel prices have led some drivers to reduce working hours or cease operations entirely due to the inability to cover expenses such as maintenance, insurance, and spare parts.

These rising costs impact the wider economy as increased transport fares raise the cost of commuting for workers and students, while also driving up food prices as traders face higher logistics expenses. While a recent GHC2 reduction in diesel prices occurred, stakeholders noted it was insufficient to alleviate the financial burden.

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has cautioned drivers against implementing unapproved fare increases. The association’s public relations officer, David Agboado, stated that any fare adjustments must follow a formal government consultation process involving all relevant stakeholders. Drivers are warned that charging unapproved fares could result in legal action.
