Ghana government pays GH¢4.40 billion for pension obligations
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that the Ghanaian government has released over GH¢4.40 billion to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and toward second-tier pension obligations. The disbursement aims to safeguard workers’ retirement benefits and ensure the stability of the nation’s three-tier pension system.
In this structure, SSNIT administers the first tier, providing monthly pensions to retirees, while the mandatory second tier provides lump-sum payments. The payment is intended to address outstanding obligations and prevent administrative delays that could affect interest accrual and fund security.
This pension funding is part of a larger fiscal effort, with the Ministry of Finance reporting that GH¢24.8 billion has been released to various statutory funds since January 2026. These funds support sectors including education, healthcare, road maintenance, and local development through entities such as the Ghana Education Trust Fund, the Free Senior High School Programme, and the National Health Insurance Fund.
