Ghana Health Ministry resolves salary arrears for 13,500 nurses
More than 99% of the 13,500 nurses and midwives recruited in 2024 in Ghana have received their outstanding salary arrears. The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, stated that the government secured the necessary financial clearance to resolve the payments after the professionals had already been posted to health facilities.
The Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives of Ghana, led by President Stephen Kwadwo Takyia, visited the Ministry of Health to express appreciation for the intervention. While most payments are complete, the Minister has directed the Human Resource Directorate to resolve the remaining individual cases.
To prevent future delays, the Minister instructed health-sector agencies to accelerate the issuance of appointment letters and the mechanization of newly recruited staff. Additionally, the government announced plans to recruit 16,000 health professionals in 2026. Financial clearance has already been secured for the first 8,000 of these recruits, with arrangements underway for the remaining 8,000 to ensure timely salary processing.
