Ghana health sector nursing recruitment and compensation

Overview

The Ghana Ministry of Health has addressed salary arrears for the majority of 13,500 nurses and midwives recruited in 2024. Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh reported that over 99% of these professionals have received their outstanding payments following the acquisition of necessary financial clearance.

To resolve remaining individual cases, the Minister has directed the Human Resource Directorate to take action. Furthermore, the government aims to prevent future payment delays by accelerating the issuance of appointment letters and mechanizing newly recruited staff. Plans are also underway to recruit 16,000 additional health professionals in 2026, with financial clearance already secured for the first 8,000 recruits.
