Ghana healthcare faces staffing shortages and blood supply risks

Experts are raising alarms regarding critical resource and infrastructure shortages within Ghana’s healthcare system. Health systems researcher Augustine Kumah reports that approximately 44% of community-based health compounds lack the basic requirements to operate effectively. While the Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) model is internationally recognized, Kumah warns that many facilities exist only on paper, lacking the necessary infrastructure, equipment, and personnel. A national workforce analysis indicates that roughly 74% of these community health compounds fail to meet minimum staffing requirements.

In a separate concern regarding medical supplies, health analyst Samuel Arthur has called on the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service to adequately resource the National Blood Service. Arthur noted that blood availability remains a critical issue, specifically regarding the availability of certain blood types. He warned that insufficient blood supplies pose a direct threat to maternal health, stating that women will continue to die during childbirth unless the issue of blood availability and community collection management is addressed.
