Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders demands enforcement of container charge cap

The Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders (GIFF) is calling for stricter enforcement of a GH¢720 cap on the Container Administrative Charge at Ghana’s ports. Despite government directives, some shipping lines continue to bill customers above this approved ceiling, according to GIFF General Secretary Paul Kobina Mensah.

Shipping lines have reportedly resisted the cap on commercial grounds, arguing that the GH¢720 limit does not adequately cover their operational costs and the realities of container handling. This disagreement has created a disconnect between regulators and operators.

GIFF warns that non-compliance increases the cost of doing business and creates financial uncertainty for importers and freight forwarders. The Institute is urging the government to move beyond issuing letters and instead implement formal sanctions and enforcement mechanisms to ensure the directive is respected.
