Ghana intensifies anti‑human‑trafficking efforts on International Day

On July 30, 2026, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in the border town of Aflao called for stronger collaborative action to combat human trafficking. Deputy Commissioner and Aflao sector commander Mark Asamoah Boakye highlighted the vulnerability of border communities, the need for increased community vigilance, inter‑agency cooperation and public education, and announced a training workshop for officers to detect modern trafficking methods. He urged residents, transport operators and traditional authorities to report suspicious activity and protect children.

At the same day’s national commemoration in Accra, the International Justice Mission (IJM) urged deeper partnerships among government, civil society, media and survivor groups to sustain Ghana’s fight against trafficking. IJM West Africa Programme Director Anita Budu reflected on the 20‑year anniversary of Ghana’s Human Trafficking Act, noting its comprehensive framework for prevention, protection, prosecution and a dedicated fund, but stressing that effective partnerships are essential to translate the law into results. She cited successful collaborations, such as the Coalition of NGOs Against Child Trafficking, as models for coordinated response.
