Nigeria and Ghana have launched new strategic initiatives to modernize their agricultural sectors through mechanization and enhanced education.

In Nigeria, the Federal Government unveiled the National Agricultural Mechanisation Policy and a corresponding Investment Strategy. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Abubakar Kyari stated the goal is to transition from public procurement to a sustainable, private-sector-led ecosystem. The plan includes a ‘Mechanisation-as-a-Service’ model and the establishment of a mega tractor assembly plant with an annual capacity of 2,000 to 4,000 units. The government has already begun deploying 2,000 tractors and various implements under the Renewed Hope National Agricultural Mechanisation Programme.

In Ghana, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture launched the Ghana Agricultural Fund for Education and Transformation (GAFET). This national endowment aims to address funding gaps in agricultural training and human capital development. Minister Eric Opoku announced a target to raise GH¢10 million by the end of 2026, with a long-term goal of GH¢100 million by 2028. The fund will support laboratories, digital agriculture, research, and agribusiness incubation to ensure graduates possess the technical and entrepreneurial skills required for a modern economy.
