Ghana Maritime Authority pushes for efficiency at Tema Port
The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) is urging stakeholders to urgently implement measures to reduce delays and improve vessel turnaround times at Tema Port. During the second Just-In-Time (JIT) Sailing and Port Call Optimisation Workshop held at the Meridian Port Services (MPS) Terminal 3, officials emphasized the need for better coordination among agencies involved in vessel arrivals, processing, and departures.
Deputy Director-General of the GMA, Mubarick Masawudu, advocated for the establishment of a Maritime Single Window. This unified digital platform would allow maritime agencies and industry stakeholders to exchange information and process documentation electronically. The GMA intends to pursue the necessary legislative measures to make this system operational.
The workshop addressed various factors contributing to port delays, including customs clearance, documentation, tug and pilot services, berth allocation, and Port Health procedures. Director of Tema Port, Tebon Zumah, noted that improving operational efficiency is vital for the competitiveness of Ghana’s maritime industry, especially during the transition toward greener energy. He recommended extending the JIT Sailing system to other terminals and eventually to the Port of Takoradi. The initiative is part of the International Maritime Organisation’s GreenVoyage2050 project.
