Congestion and efficiency efforts at Tema Port
Overview
The Port of Tema in Ghana has faced increasing congestion due to rising import volumes, an accumulation of empty containers, and road traffic issues. In response, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) initiated operational measures to accelerate container evacuation, increase vessel calls, and optimize yard and traffic management systems.
Following these efforts, the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has focused on long-term efficiency and coordination. During a workshop at the Meridian Port Services Terminal 3, officials advocated for a ‘Maritime Single Window’—a unified digital platform for electronic documentation exchange. To improve vessel turnaround times and competitiveness, the GMA is pursuing legislative measures for digital integration and exploring the expansion of ‘Just-In-Time’ sailing systems to other terminals and the Port of Takoradi.
