Ghana Mining Drives Diaspora Investment, Sustainable Reforms and Royalty Transparency
Ghana’s mining sector is being urged to attract strategic investment from the African diaspora. Sammy Gyamfi, chief executive of the Ghana Gold Board, called on diaspora communities to move beyond remittances and fund long‑term projects in manufacturing, agribusiness, technology, health, infrastructure and green energy, while praising President John Dramani Mahama’s policies aimed at strengthening African ownership of strategic resources.
The government is also seeking technical cooperation with Australia. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said Ghana will draw on Australian expertise to implement sustainable mining practices, restore degraded forests and polluted waterways, and expand solar energy as part of its renewable‑energy transition.
Ghana’s Minerals Commission was honoured at the 5th Mining Local Content and Compliance Forum in Mwanza, Tanzania, receiving a continental award for its leadership in advancing local‑content policies that keep mining spend within the domestic economy.
Separately, the Extractive‑Sector Multi‑Stakeholder Group has urged Parliament to enforce the timely disbursement of mineral royalties to host communities, warning that delays are stalling development projects and undermining the Minerals Development Fund Act.
