Ghana mining pit collapse kills at least seven people
At least seven people have died and one remains missing following the collapse of an illegal mining pit in Manso Keniago, located in the Amansie South District of Ghana's Ashanti Region.
The incident occurred on the night of Thursday, September 3, 2026. Reports indicate that approximately 12 male miners were working inside the pit at the time of the collapse. While four individuals managed to escape the site without injury, eight others were trapped beneath the debris.
Rescue efforts involving the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), local police, and community volunteers have utilized four excavators to assist in recovery operations. As of the latest reports, seven bodies have been retrieved, including one victim identified by the nickname ‘Chinchilla’. Authorities are continuing search operations for the remaining individual believed to be trapped underground.
