Ghanaian Minority demands audit of GH¢49.7m South Africa evacuation spending

Ghana's parliamentary Minority is demanding an independent audit of GH¢49.7 million spent on evacuating 1,964 citizens from South Africa following xenophobic violence. The Minority, led by Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, alleges significant discrepancies in official records provided by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Key concerns include a GH¢16.4 million gap in verifiable spending. Specifically, the Minority noted that while the government claims every evacuee received a GH¢5,000 reintegration grant and a GH¢500 transport allowance, only 824 names could be matched across both payment registers. Additionally, flight records reportedly only account for 1,173 of the 1,964 reported evacuees.

In response, Minister Ablakwa has invited the Ghana Audit Service to conduct a full-scale audit of all evacuations conducted since 2017 to ensure accountability. Meanwhile, the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has advised citizens in Johannesburg and Durban to exercise caution due to ongoing protests and potential civil unrest in South Africa.
