Ghana Ministry directs MMDAs to maintain vehicles for Traditional Councils
The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has issued a directive to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) regarding the management of Nissan Patrol four-wheel-drive vehicles. The Ministry instructed that these vehicles must be maintained in good working condition to facilitate the official movements and engagements of Traditional Councils within their jurisdictions.
Recognizing the role of Traditional Councils in local governance, dispute resolution, and community development, the Ministry stated that appropriate logistical arrangements must be made for their use. MMDAs are required to establish administrative procedures for scheduling and accountability, while also making budgetary provisions for routine servicing, insurance, and operating costs.
The directive explicitly prohibits MMDAs from auctioning, disposing of, transferring, or otherwise alienating these vehicles. They are to be preserved and repaired specifically for the intended purpose of supporting traditional authorities, unless written authorization is provided by a competent authority in accordance with applicable laws.
