Ghana local government vehicle distribution and management

Overview

The Ghana Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has initiated efforts to improve mobility for local authorities through vehicle distribution and management directives.

On October 20, 2026, the Ministry distributed 128 brand-new Haval H9 SUVs and pickup trucks to selected Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). Sector Minister Mahama Ayariga stated the distribution aims to strengthen decentralization, noting that many officials had previously lacked official transport. The vehicles are designated as public assets for official duties, such as supervising development projects.

Following this, on October 25, 2026, the Ministry issued a directive to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) regarding the management of Nissan Patrol four-wheel-drive vehicles. The Ministry instructed that these vehicles must be maintained to facilitate the official movements of Traditional Councils. MMDAs are required to establish administrative procedures and budgetary provisions for servicing and insurance, and are explicitly prohibited from auctioning, disposing of, or transferring these vehicles without written authorization.
