Ghana Ministry of Health targets completion of 35 stalled hospitals

The Ghanaian Ministry of Health has announced plans to complete approximately 35 stalled hospitals under the Agenda 111 programme within the next two years. Ministry spokesperson Tony Goodman stated that work has resumed on some sites, with about 10 facilities currently showing improvement. To achieve this, the government intends to seek partnerships with multinational companies, non-governmental organizations, and the Christian Health Association of Ghana.

This announcement follows criticism from former Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, who questioned the government's decision to fund three new 160-bed regional referral hospitals in the Oti, Savannah, and Western North regions while numerous district-level Agenda 111 projects remain unfinished. Dr. Boye argued that resources should be prioritized for completing the existing stalled district hospitals.

The Ministry of Health has rejected these concerns, asserting that the two infrastructure projects are not competing for the same funds. Officials maintain that both regional and district-level facilities are necessary, noting that the new regional hospitals are essential to provide specialist care and reduce the need for residents in underserved areas to travel long distances, such as to Accra, for advanced medical treatment.
