Ghana Minority Leader demands national dialogue over education crisis

Ghanaian Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called for an urgent national dialogue to address what he describes as a crisis in the country’s education system. The call follows recent West African Examinations Council (WAEC) results showing that 183,233 students completed senior high school this year without earning a single credit pass in Core Mathematics.

Afenyo-Markin also highlighted a decline in English Language performance, noting that the credit pass rate fell to 62.40%, the lowest in four years. He warned that these trends, combined with issues in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) placement process, could leave over 200,000 young Ghanaians at risk of being left behind.

Regarding BECE placements, the Minority Leader cited reports of 54,985 candidates being denied automatic placement and students being assigned to special schools without cause. He challenged government data regarding school vacancies, arguing that reported vacancies must translate into actual seats in functioning classrooms rather than just digital access to self-placement portals.
