Ghana education system performance concerns

Concerns have emerged regarding the quality of education and examination outcomes in Ghana. Following recent West African Examinations Council (WAEC) results, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin characterized the situation as an education crisis, noting that 183,233 students completed senior high school without a single credit pass in Core Mathematics. He also reported that English Language credit pass rates fell to 62.40%, the lowest in four years, and raised concerns regarding the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) placement process.

In response to the debate over academic standards, education experts have urged stakeholders to prioritize student performance over critiques of the grading mechanism. Prof Stephen Adei argued that the grading structure is not the cause of result fluctuations and cautioned against using single-year data to establish trends. Similarly, Kofi Asare of Africa Education Watch stated that the conversation should focus on why students struggle to meet standards despite years of basic education, rather than critiquing the use of stanine norms in the grading system.
