Ghana MMDAs Focus on Governance Reforms and Financial Discipline
The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, together with the Institute of Local Government Studies and the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana, conducted a two‑day capacity‑building workshop for members of the Mampong Municipal Assembly. Local governance expert Frederick Agyarko Oduro urged the assemblies to adopt corporate‑governance standards, strengthen oversight of municipal executives, and reevaluate the role of MPs on local assemblies.
At a separate town‑hall meeting in Tamale, the Centre for Local Governance Advocacy, funded by the European Union, presented the Public Financial Management Compliance League Table results, showing the national compliance score rise from 33 % in 2024 to 66.2 % in 2025. The forum called on all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to consolidate gains, improve internal controls and reporting, and aim for higher compliance, highlighting progress in the Northern Region where eleven of sixteen assemblies exceeded the 50 % threshold.
