Ghanaian MP demands probe into $1bn in global narcotics seizures

Assin South Member of Parliament Rev. John Ntim Fordjour has called for a full-scale investigation into a series of massive narcotics seizures allegedly linked to Ghana. Fordjour, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence Committee, claims that over $1 billion worth of drugs has been intercepted globally in less than two years under the administration of President John Mahama.

Specific incidents cited include a $208 million methamphetamine bust in Australia in April 2026 and a recent seizure in France involving nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine valued at approximately $261 million. The cocaine was discovered hidden in a container of plastic waste arriving from Ghana at the port of Dunkirk.

Fordjour has raised concerns regarding potential government complicity, noting that while the Interior Minister previously acknowledged to Parliament that officials were involved in trafficking, no specific individuals have been named, fired, or prosecuted. He is demanding an immediate inquiry involving the Interior Ministry, Transport Ministry, Narcotics Control Commission, Ghana Immigration Service, and the BNI.
