Ghanaian political calls for narcotics investigation

Overview

Ghanaian Members of Parliament have called for investigations into large-scale international narcotics seizures allegedly linked to the country. Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence Committee, reported that over $1 billion in drugs have been intercepted globally in less than two years. He specifically cited a $208 million methamphetamine bust in Australia in April 2026 and a recent seizure in France involving nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine valued at approximately $261 million. The cocaine was found in a container of plastic waste arriving from Ghana at the port of Dunkirk.

Following these developments, Ghana’s Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) arrested three suspects allegedly linked to the international trafficking network of Dutch fugitive Jos Leijdekkers, known as ‘Bolle Jos’. The suspects are in NACOC custody to assist with investigations. In response to the seizure, NACOC stated it is working with the Ghana Navy and Marine Police to increase coastal patrols and is engaging French authorities to trace how the shipment left Ghanaian ports.

Dr. Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu, MP for Madina, and other lawmakers have demanded a thorough investigation to protect Ghana’s international reputation. In response to growing scrutiny of Ghana as a transit corridor for international cartels, President John Mahama has convened a high-level meeting at Jubilee House. This meeting brings together maritime security, customs, and intelligence agencies to review cargo and passenger screening systems, improve intelligence-sharing, and deploy new technologies to disrupt trafficking through the country’s ports, airports, and land borders.
