Ghana MTTD to launch automated traffic enforcement system
The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service is implementing reforms to curb bribery and extortion by traffic officers. ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng stated that the department is moving toward automated enforcement to reduce direct negotiations between motorists and police, which often lead to officers soliciting money to avoid arrest or court action.
A key component of this initiative is the rollout of TRAFFITECH-GH, a technology-driven system designed to strengthen road traffic regulation enforcement. Under this new system, speeding violations will be captured electronically and verified by a back office before an electronic notice of violation is issued.
Speeding penalties will be progressively higher based on the severity of the offense. Motorists will be fined 20 penalty units for every five kilometers per hour exceeded above the limit. With one penalty unit valued at GH¢12, this results in a minimum fine of GH¢240 per five-km/h increment. The TRAFFITECH-GH system is scheduled to begin operations on November 1, following a delay intended to allow for public education and stakeholder engagement.
