Ghana National Fire Service launches AFCAS digital system

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched the Automated Fire Compliance and Safety System (AFCAS), a digital platform designed to replace the agency’s manual, paper-based processes. The transition follows significant fire incidents at major locations, including the Kantamanto and Kejetia markets, which resulted in the destruction of thousands of stalls and livelihoods.

The new digital system allows property owners, vehicle owners, and occupiers to apply online for fire permits, fire certificates, and equipment tagging. This move aims to address previous systemic failures, such as slow application processing times, susceptibility to forgery, and a lack of real-time verification. GNFS data indicated that over 70% of properties nationwide previously lacked valid fire certificates due to the inefficiencies of the manual system.
