Ghana National Identification Authority arrests six staff over extortion

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has arrested six staff members and dismissed seven others following allegations of extortion during a free Ghana Card registration drive in Galaka, Upper East Region. The exercise was intended to register children aged six to 14 at no cost.

According to an NIA statement, parents identified six officials who allegedly demanded unauthorized payments before processing their children's registrations. These individuals were arrested by the Bawku West District Police and are currently assisting with investigations.

An internal review by the Authority also led to the termination of seven additional team members. The NIA stated these employees were found to have been aware of the misconduct but failed to report it. The Authority has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and urged the public to report any suspected misconduct through official channels.
