Corruption and misconduct in Ghanaian state agencies
Overview
Recent investigations into Ghanaian state institutions have uncovered various forms of misconduct and corruption.
In the Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI), an internal probe revealed a smuggling scheme at detention facilities. Investigators found that staff used food deliveries to bypass security protocols, supplying detainees with mobile phones and accessories. This investigation resulted in the dismissal of six officers, the demotion of one, and the exoneration of another.
Separately, the National Identification Authority (NIA) faced allegations of extortion during a free Ghana Card registration drive in the Upper East Region. In Galaka, parents reported that officials demanded unauthorized payments to process registrations for children aged six to 14. This led to the arrest of six staff members by the Bawku West District Police, who are currently assisting with investigations. An internal review by the NIA also resulted in the dismissal of seven additional team members who were found to have been aware of the misconduct but failed to report it.
