Ghana National Petroleum Authority expands consumer safety focus
The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) of Ghana is shifting its consumer protection strategy to focus on community engagement and public education. During the 2026 Consumer Week celebration held at Kasoa Ofaakor Park, NPA Chief Executive Godwin Kudzo Tameklo emphasized that safety and confidence must be established throughout the entire downstream petroleum sector, including how products are transported and used, rather than relying solely on regulatory inspections.
Tameklo issued a specific warning against the dangerous practice of siphoning fuel from overturned tankers. He urged the public to discourage friends and relatives from attempting to collect spilled petroleum products at accident scenes, noting that such actions put lives and entire communities at risk. The NPA aims to integrate public education into its core regulatory framework to ensure consumers understand the risks associated with petroleum products and follow safety standards.
