Ghana NPP internal elections suspended by courts

A series of Ghanaian courts have issued interim injunctions halting New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency executive elections in several areas. The High Court in Kumasi stopped elections in the Bantama and Manso Nkwanta constituencies, while a court in the Central Region suspended the Assin South poll. In the Western North Region, a High Court barred the Bibiani constituency election pending a pending injunction. The injunctions, typically lasting ten days, follow legal challenges by party members who allege breaches of the NPP’s constitution, irregular nomination processes and concerns over the integrity of electoral registers.

In the Ablekuma West constituency, aggrieved members have petitioned the party’s National Executive Committee over alleged fraud and the removal of elected delegates from the constituency’s electoral register, seeking a fresh, transparent register. The disputes arise as the NPP prepares for a nationwide internal reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general elections, with internal democratic processes under scrutiny and accusations of divisive tactics by senior party figures.
