Ghana NPP pushes internal reforms ahead of 2028 elections

In the Central Tongu constituency, Fiagbenu Guggisberg, a candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) chairmanship, pledged to unite the party, establish a permanent constituency office and launch a welfare scheme for members, including support for those affected by a recent campaign accident. He said the reforms aim to strengthen grassroots mobilisation and improve the party’s chances of winning its first parliamentary seat in Central Tongu by the 2028 general election.

Former Subin MP Eugene Boakye Antwi, seeking the NPP General Secretary post, called for the adoption of a “one member, one vote” system to deepen internal democracy and rebuild after the party’s 2024 electoral defeat. He urged the implementation of the Jimmy Heymann Committee’s recommendation at the July 2025 National Delegates Conference, arguing that logistical concerns should not delay reforms that would give ordinary members greater influence.

Both candidates stressed the need for stronger grassroots engagement, youth participation and improved polling structures as central to the NPP’s renewal agenda ahead of future elections.
