Ghana opposition parties prepare for key leadership contests

Former Local Government Minister Akwasi Opong‑Fosu has entered the National Democratic Congress (NDC) race for national chairman. With more than four decades of public service—including roles as deputy minister, minister for local government and environment, and president of United Cities and Local Governments‑Africa—he pledged to restore party values, strengthen institutions and renew Ghana’s political mindset.

At the same time, New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Communications Director Richard Ahiagbah announced his bid for the position of National First Vice Chairman. He urged the party to rebuild discipline, unity and structures after its 2024 electoral loss, promising to promote liberal‑conservative values, accountability and grassroots engagement ahead of the 2028 elections.
