Ghana overhauls waste management after ending Zoomlion contract

The Ghanaian government has terminated the long‑standing sanitation contract between the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and private waste‑handling firm Zoomlion Ghana Limited. Following the contract’s expiry in late 2024, the Talensi District Assembly announced it will recruit former YEA sweepers to resume street‑sweeping duties, while Zoomlion will focus on transporting collected refuse to the district dump site at Yameriga.

In parallel, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs outlined a broader sanitation reform for the Greater Accra Region. Five of six designated waste‑transfer stations are now operational, and the government is formalising these stations and integrating tricycle waste collectors into the system. The Jamestown transfer station now handles waste from about 800 tricycles daily, with a 24‑hour schedule to reduce traffic near Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The reforms aim to improve public‑health outcomes and sustain waste management through a public‑private partnership model.
