Nigeria Customs seizes N3.57bn in smuggled goods in Ogun

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Ogun I Area Command has intercepted smuggled goods with a combined duty-paid value of approximately N3.57 billion. The seizures, conducted during intensified operations between June 24 and August 13, 2026, were announced by Acting Area Comptroller Olukayode Afeni at the command’s headquarters in Idiroko, Ogun State.

Major items seized include 2,339 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 70 cartons of basmati rice, and 6,035 parcels of suspected cannabis (described as Ghana Loud/Indica). Other contraband includes 30 bags of foreign sugar, 11,450 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in kegs, 1,750 litres of PMS in drums, 30 kegs of diesel, 100 bags of fertiliser, and various quantities of clothing, cosmetics, and drinks.

Afeni characterized the smuggling activities as “economic sabotage” that threatens national food security and undermines local farmers and manufacturers. He noted that the influx of foreign goods could force local industries to close and exacerbate unemployment. The command has vowed to make border corridors increasingly hostile to smugglers through enhanced intelligence and technology.
