Ghana police destroy cannabis farm and seize suspected marijuana shipment

Police from the Volta Regional Command destroyed more than eight acres of Indian hemp at Peki‑Dzake in the South Dayi District of Ghana's Volta Region. The operation was led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Wisdom Akorli, who said it was part of an intensified crackdown on the cultivation, sale and use of illicit drugs and urged residents to provide intelligence.

In a separate operation, Bole District police intercepted 73 parcels of suspected cannabis hidden in a commercial vehicle on the Banda Nkwanta‑Teslima highway in the Savannah Region. The driver and a female passenger were arrested; they allegedly offered GH¢300,000 in bribes, which officers refused. The seized material will be forensic‑tested, and investigators say the shipment was intended for a community linked to illegal mining. Both actions are being conducted under Ghana's Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019), which imposes severe penalties for drug trafficking and attempts to obstruct police duties.
