Ghana Police to arrest motorists misusing pedestrian footbridges

The Ghana Police Service has announced plans to deploy officers to monitor pedestrian footbridges and arrest motorists who use them unlawfully. The initiative aims to enforce road safety regulations and ensure these structures are used solely for safe pedestrian passage.

ACP Alexander Obeng, Director of Education, Research and Training at the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), disclosed the enforcement plan during a stakeholders' engagement organized by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA).

In addition to targeting motorists, authorities are seeking to clear footbridges of hawkers and traders who have turned the walkways into makeshift markets. ACP Obeng noted that previous joint eviction efforts by the police and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) have been frequently hindered by political interference, making it difficult to maintain these safety structures.
