Ghana road infrastructure encroachment and safety
Overview
Authorities in Ghana are addressing increasing safety hazards caused by the misuse of road infrastructure. The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has identified significant encroachment on pedestrian walkways, bus stops, and road shoulders by petty traders, particularly in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area. Key locations of concern include the Central Business District, Mallam Market, Kaneshie, and the Graphic Road.
This occupation of pedestrian spaces forces people into traffic and contributes to congestion by compelling drivers to park on road shoulders. In response, the Ghana Police Service, through the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), announced plans to deploy officers to monitor pedestrian footbridges and arrest motorists using them unlawfully.
Efforts to clear these structures of both motorists and hawkers have faced challenges. ACP Alexander Obeng noted that previous joint eviction attempts by police and local assemblies have been “frequently hindered by political interference,” complicating the maintenance of these safety structures.
