Ghana security scrutinized after €225 million cocaine seizure in France

The seizure of approximately 3.9 tonnes of cocaine, valued at €225 million, at the Port of Dunkirk in France has sparked intense debate regarding security failures in Ghana. The narcotics were discovered concealed within a container of plastic waste that had departed from a Ghanaian port.

Experts and policy analysts have raised concerns about systemic vulnerabilities. Kofi Bentil of IMANI Africa argued that the scale of the shipment suggests traffickers expected complicity within the system, calling for investigations into everyone involved in the container's handling chain. Similarly, Adib Saani of the Jatikay Centre for Human Security and Peacebuilding called for a comprehensive overhaul of the national security architecture, suggesting that current officials have failed to prevent large-scale illicit drug flows.

Legal actions are already underway in Ghana. Four individuals have been arraigned in Accra, and six others, including officials linked to the Ghana Revenue Authority, have been remanded in connection with the customs scanning process at Tema Port. While some analysts view the seizures as evidence of improved surveillance, others, such as criminologist Emmanuel Sowatey, warn that repeated trafficking incidents could damage Ghana’s international reputation and affect the legitimacy of its citizens and businesses abroad.
