Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority acts to ease Tema Port congestion
The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has launched urgent operational measures to address increasing congestion at the Port of Tema. The buildup is attributed to a sharp rise in import volumes, growing numbers of empty containers awaiting export, and road traffic challenges within the port enclave.
To alleviate the pressure, the GPHA is implementing several interventions, including accelerating the evacuation of empty containers through increased vessel calls and strengthened container transfer operations. The authority is also deploying additional trucks and optimizing yard and traffic management systems to maximize terminal capacity.
The GPHA noted that similar congestion is affecting several ports across the West African sub-region. Stakeholders have been placed on heightened operational alert, and the authority is working closely with shipping lines and terminal operators. Importers, clearing agents, and cargo owners have been urged to expedite the clearance and evacuation of consignments to help free up critical terminal space.
